   There was but one fireplace in the house - the open hearth in the kitchen. On this a good fire usually blazed when the turf was dry, and around it were stools of all sizes & shapes on which the people took a good heat of the fire. The chimney consisted of a hurdle which was made of seasoned scallops. Sometimes it was plastered on the outside with line putty. Indeed the chimneys were usually bad drawers and very often
