Thirty years ago boat racing was the principal past-time in this district. Faughalstown had a great team of Oarsmen. They were challenged several times but were victorious most times. The teams which challenged them were from Clonave which is situated on the north-west side of Derravaragh. The most prominent of the Faughalstown team were, Edward Hope and Patrick Flanagan, Gartlanstown and Matt Boyhan, Faughalstown.- Collector
