  1. About fifty years ago there came a great plague. It was called scarlet fever.
    This disease was a very dangerous one and six small children who were coming to this school died of it.
    A famine came after that which was twice as bad as the fever.
    Scores of people starved and many a poor man died in the gripe.
    When the turnips and cabbage were in the fields the people were seen eating them like
