    About twenty years ago an old man named John Duff lived in Bigwood. One night when he was going home from a ceilidhe in Faughalstown he went astray and not knowing where he was going he walked into Derravaragh. He was alone and as no one came to help him, he persisted in the cold.
    He was found standing dead in four feet of water the following morning.
    About sixty years ago a man named Gordon was drowned when sliding on Derravaragh off the Coolure shore. There were a number of others sliding also but Gordon went too far and the ice broke down with him. He went under the ice and as he could not keep his head over the water he smothered. The people who were sliding with him made no attempt to rescue him as they were afraid the ice would also break with them.
