The only book they had was an English book. There was writing done with a slate pencil on a slate. The children sat on blocks of wood. There was no blackboard in this school. The teacher always remained in our district.
Mary Smyth, Grangestown, Castlepollard.
Informant - Mrs Dunleavy, Bigwood, Castlepollard. - About sixty years ago school was carried on in a school which was situated at Milltown which is about a mile and a half north-east of lake Derravaragh. It was called Benison Lodge school, being in Collinstown parish.
The principal teacher was a man named Thomas Bateman and the other teacher was his daughter, Miss Mary(continues on next page)- Collector
