- (continued from previous page)They were then to set out, fully equipped for battle, and meet Nenctua at the Long Ridge of the Ash Trees. She promised that Aulinn would be safe.
however Mella somehow suspected treachery and did not trust the old woman. She also suspected that Deverra was herself in love with Aulinn and would have revenge on him for scorning her love. So she promised to do as Nenctua told her but made up her mind to slip back and watch Nenctua and her daughter.
As the sum was setting she arrived back unseen and climbed to the top of the ridge which stretched 700 yards from east to west. She saw Nenctua and Deverra coming from the farthest end so she climbed up into one of the great ash trees and watched.
She now saw that the 40 saplings she had sent were now planted on each side of the line of ash trees- about 10 yards down each slope. so -

She noticed also with astonishment that the saplings had already grown several feet and were still growing. Meanwhile Nenctua and Deverra were coming forward along the top of the ridge winding in and out among(continues on next page)- Collector
