  1. The old houses long ago were thatched and some were thatched with rushes. The thatch was got at home. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was called a settle bed. It was used as a bed by night and a couch by day. It was placed along by the wall. The fire was placed in the gable end of the house. The chimneys were made of clay and wattles. The fires were sometime, on the floor on the hearthstone, and are in some houses to the present day. The floors were made of
