- (continued from previous page)You'd rather die a soldier than fill a helot's grave
Then for your country's honour, oh, let it not be said,
That you would be a traitor and not wear a green cockade.
III
So stand up faithful brethren and triumph shall you crown
Your race shall read with pleasure, your record of renown
And sing your praise in future when on your grave you're laid
And say you were a hero bold, and wore a green cockade.
IV
So stand up noble youth, your heart doth pant for fame,
And raise your country's banner, and win an honoured name,
And if perchance you're wooing some noble hearted maid,
Will not she love you better still, for wearing a green cockade.
V
So forward now each stripling, each boy, and each man
Our vanguards they are ready, our chieftains laid the plan
And for your native liberty now do unsheath each blade
And send it to the hilt in him that betrays the green cockade
VI
So to conclude and finish the rustic pen I'll stay
And for the gallant men of Kill, I do intend this lay
As they were always foremost and never yet afraid
To flaunt your banners freely and wear a green cockadeN.B. Kill = Kilcomreragh, called the parish of Kill.
