- Long ago in Ireland it was customary to put "Nicknames" on certain people. These "Nicknames" often followed families for generations.
They were usually given on account of some characteristic in appearance or manner.
There are many "nicknames" prevalent still in our locality. In a family named Duignan there is a tall boy called Bill and his cousin of the same name is not tall.
