- St Stephen as all Catholics know, was stoned to death. In Ireland the custom of stoning a wren to death is held in some places, the stoning being done in honour of St. Stephen.
However, the practice being cruel, is now dying out, and an artificial wren is carried instead of the real bird.- Collector
