    May 1651 all Catholics in this area were ordered to clear out and leave the lands and homes to Cromwell's Protestant followers. In this march from Mullingar to Galway over the Shannon, thousands died by the road-side, being pursued by Cromwell's cruel soldiers.
    The landlord got his land from Cromwell 1651 - the number of acres 1500, 1000 and 2000 prove this fact. The land was not divided into farms but all the holdings of 50 to 100 acres were joined into big farms - all the ditches and hedges being levelled thus giving the district the appearance it had up to 1936 - grass ranches on each side of the road from Mullingar to Turin - bullocks lying lazily in the rich green grass, an old herd's house here and there in the ranch land and traces of the former's homes - old bits of broken walls crumbling to decay
