  1. Many years ago, there was a boat race on Lough Iron, about a quarter of a mile from my home. Another boat went out with a lot of people to watch the race.
    They were Pat Freil, John and Tom Macken, Louise and Lizzie Melia, a policemen named Brady, Joe Macken and my grandfather, Michael Mulligan.
    They were told before they went out, not to go, as it was the 15th of August, and there is an old tradition in the neighbourhood that this day was a noted one for drowning in the lake.
