- There was a man named Mr. Lynch who used to teach in a hedge school about two hundred yards from the present Ballynacargy. He used to live in a mud wall cabin and my uncles has a work-shop on the site of it now. About twenty boys used to go to him to be taught during the wonder nights from six o'clock till then.. They used to bring a couple of sods each, to make a fire for themselves. He taught them no Irish, only the ordinary subjects such as arithmetic, reading and writing. The boys used to give him a few shillings each according to what they could afford, and this was how he was paid.
