    The potatoes are stored in pits. A hole sufficient to hold the quantity of potatoes to be stored about half a foot deep. The potatoes are then piled in. Then they are covered with hay or straw. Then clay is put over that again. Then they are thatched with hay or straw.
    The local names given to various kinds of potatoes are "Violetstown Wonders", "Skerry Blues", "Flower of May", "Champions", "Epicures", "Flounders", "Arran Banners" and others. The potatoes that grow best in the district are "Champions", "Epicures", "Flounder" and "Violetstown Wonders".
