- Most of the place names around my district have their origin in the Irish language. The name of the place where I live is Laragh, from the Irish "Leath-Ráth" or half fort. The bigger half of the fort is the next townland to Rathmore, derived from "Ráth Mór" or big fort. In the olden days the clans of Laragh and Rathmore built the fort as a fortification against the inroads of the clansmen of Balroe who were noted freebooters. Balroe or "Baile Ruadh" is so called(continues on next page)
