- Local StoryOnce there lived a man in our district, Newbridge Ballinahown named Denis Daly. He was liked (around) by. nobody around. One day a poor scholar wrote 5D on a gate. Denis said he would give of ten pounds to any person who could tell him what the 5d stood for. One day a poor stranger came along and saw the 5d on the gates and was told of the reward of ten pounds for interpreting it . He went in and said to Denis. "I see you have a reward up for any man who can tell you what the 5d stands for". "I have", said Denis, well I will tell you what they mean . the said that, Dibble, Double, Damn, Denis Daly was the meaning of the 5 D's. The stranger was able to tell him though he never heard of Denis Daly's name before, and he gave him the ten pounds reward.
