It was the main road to Dublin then, but is not used now.The Abbey road leads from Athlone to the "yacht club", the Roscommon road leads to Roscommon, the Ballinasloe road leads from Athlone to Ballinasloe and Galway, and the Clonown road leads to Clonown. There is a hill, and a pillar on it at Kilkenny West beyond Glasson. It was built by the Government to give money to poor peple in famine times. It is about ten feet high and five feet broad.The roads around Athlone are being repaired to give the people who were on the "dole" work.There are a few byways in Athlone known as the 1 mile, the 2 mile, the 4 mile, and Bliary.Before bridges were built in Athlone the people got across the river by stepping stones. After a while a bridge was made with boats.Long ago people around Athlone used to worship the moon, and since then it was(continues on next page)
