  1. Saint Brigid is the Saint connected with this district.
    There are no churches in use in Athlone that were built by her.
    The following is a story about the local Saint:-

    Saint Brigid and two Nuns wanted to cross the Shannon. Saint Brigid went across on stepping-stones. The Nuns were afraid to cross that way so they got a boat. When they were half way over a current carried the boat away. Saint Brigid prayed that the boat and the Nuns should reach the other side safely and they did.
    There was a holy well dedicated to Saint Brigid but it is not used now. There is a place called Saint Brigid's Terrace after Saint Brigid.
    A great many people in Athlone are called after the local Saint.
    Saint Brigid's day is on the 1st February but it is not kept as a holiday.
    Saint Brigid was buried in Down Patrick. People are told that if they don't keep St. Brigid's Day, she will trouble their
