  1. Hege Schools
    The Hedge Schools were chiefly in country discricts. The pupils went without shoes and carried a few sods of turf for a fire. Teaching was done in an old hut and sometimes under the hedge. In the hut the pupils sat on planks around a table in the middle of the floor.
    The teachers in these schools travelled around from one district to another and were usually strangers. The parents of the children supplied them with food. The most noted in the district was Micky Flanagan. He taught at Briarfield and there were fifteen
