- There are no very old houses in this district that were to to be had in olden times; they are all remodelled now to the modern type. Old people tell us those were mud wall cabins and thatched with either straw or heath. The heath was got in the bog. A well-to-do farmer's house was built of the same material except that it was higher than the low cabin, and had windows having twelve panes of glass. The front and back walls were supported with butments of stone, built on the outside so as to keep them safe from slipping down. They had hip-gables. The windows were on the front; the windows for the top storey were on the gable end. The family(continues on next page)
