    came, the fire was trampled on, and the live embers, ashes etc. were scattered through the neighbouring fields. This was supposed to ensure a clean bill of health among the cattle for the remainder of the year.
    My mother used to say that in the Frenchpark area of Roscommon, the cattle would be stamped through the fire, with the same object in view. That was over sixty years ago when she was a child.

    A good many people in this district keep St. Stephen's Day as a day of Abstinence. They believe that this observance will preserve them from contagious illness during the year. This is a very old tradition.
