    Another proverb I have heard used locally is "As bad as Paddy was, it is better to have him than to be without him."
    Paddy was a very lazy servant that was in a certain house in my townland of Carrickduff, Granard, Co. Longford. The people of the house sent him away, and one day the cows of this house broke out through the fence to the road, and there was no one to mend the fence when Paddy was not there. This gave rise to the saying "as bad as Paddy was it is better to have him than to be without him."
