- Food in Ancient times and how it was prepared.Oatmeal and potatoes were the principal food of the country people of Ireland in the olden times. The men went to work early out in the fields without breaking their fast. After working for an hour or two they came into the house and took a meal of oaten porridge and buttermilk. The porridge was on a large delph dish on the table and the milk in wooden noggins. They used iron spoons to eat this food. These men were considered fortunate if they then got a noggin of new milk and a piece of oaten bread after the porridge.
