1. Old Houses

   The houses in this District in former times were not of the same type as the houses that are in it now.
   Every house in the District long ago had a roof of thatch on it.
   Every one who had good land grew wheat for the purpose of thatching their houses because the wheaten straw was better for thatching than any other kind of straw.
   In olden times there was a bed in the kitchen in every house. This bed was called a settle bed and was placed beside the wall.
   The fire place was always at the gable wall and the front of the chimney was made of clay and wattles.
   In the old houses there was no glass for the windows but instead there was a hole in the wall and at night the people stuffed the holes with hay.
   The floors long ago in every house were made of clay. The clay which made them was got from a deep hole in the ground and was very brown.
   Half doors are not very common in the District nowadays but long ago there was not a house without one.
   The materials used for the fires in the old houses were turf and wood.
