  1. There are potatoes grown on my farm every year.
There is an Irish acre of land under potatoes.
The ground is generally turned up first after which there is manure spread on the turned up ground. Sometimes the ground is manured before being turned up.
The potatoes are mostly sown in drills in march land and in ridges in upland.
For making drills the ground is ploughed and harrowed several times. The drills are then opened with a plough after which there is manure spread in the open drills. The potatoes are then dropped in the drills after which they are closed. When making ridges the ground is first ploughed after which the furrows are scored. The manure is then spread on the ridges after which the potatoes are dropped and covered.
In olden times there were wooden ploughs used, but they are now placed by iron ploughs.
Sometimes there are spades used for making ridges. They are bought in the shops.
Before potatoes are sown they are cut into small pieces called splits. There is an eye or two in every split.
