a heap of clay that was in the ditch, the enemy stood on his toes to draw down on Roche. But Roche raised the barrel of the gun, the sword struck it and it went in a thousand pieces. Pat leaped up and killed the soldier. After that he had no rest at home and he joined up in a foreign army. One day as he was marching through a village he saw an old man leaning out over a door.
Roche grabbed the old man by the long beard he wore and pulled him out over the half door. He was called to account for his conduct and the "General-in Charge" said that only he was such a brave good soldier he would be shot for doing what he did, as the bearded man was none other than the richest man in the whole country.
