    Old Houses
Old houses in this district long ago were thatched. The houses were thatched with wheaten straw. The old houses had a bed in the kitchen. It was placed near the fire. It was called a settle bed. The fire was always placed at the gable-wall. I never heard that it was in the corner or against a side-wall. The chimney was made of wattles and mud.
The old people remember houses with no chimney only a hole in the top.
