  1. There are five forges in the parish of Adamstown, one in Doonooney, one in Adamstown, one in Misterin, one in Grallagh, and one in Newbawn. There are three blacksmiths in the one in Grallagh. This forge dates back to before 1798 and it was handed down from father to son. A stream runs beside it. It is divided into two parts, and there is a thatched roof on one part and a felt one on the other. Most of the work is done in the forge except the binding of wheels which is done out in the open.
    There is a big bench running along beneath the window and on this the vice is fixed. The anvil is on a big block of timber in front of the fire. A big bellows, which is worked by the hand, keeps the fire lighting. There is a big sledge laid beside the anvil, used for fattening iron. There is a water trough in the
