- The Potato CropWe sow potatoes on our farm every year. We always sow an acre of them. We never sow more or less than the acres. There are six rows in an acre. There are nine drills in a row.My brother prepares the ground. He ploughs it and cultivates it in Winter. No weeds grow in the cultivator scrapes. When the Spring comes he ploughs it again, and rolls, harrows and cultivates it several tines. Then he ploughs on the cross to break the scraws. Then he harrows, rolls and cultivates it again. Then he opens the drills. The potatoes are not sown in ridges they are sown in drills. A plough called a "double mould board" is used for this purpose.Spades are not used nowadays.
