- There is one forge in the district. Laurence Keating is the smith. His people were smiths for a good many years but I do not know the exact number. The forge is situated in Coolroe near the river that separates Coolroe from Coolboy. The forge is fairly big with stone walls whitewashed and a clay floor and a slated roof. There is only one fireplace within. He shoes and asses. He does not make farm implements but he mends them when they get broken. He shoes a horse by putting the iron into the fire and leaving it until it is red hot and then bending it into the shape of a horses shoe and putting it on the horse's foot. There is a belief that if you had warts and dip them in forge water, they would be cured. He shoes wheels in the open air. He shoes them outside the forge.
