- Some people have churns in their homes, A churn is 3 1/2 ft in height and 2 1/2 feet wide at the top and bottom. It is 2 ft wide in the middle. The sides are round. The different parts are, the bottom, sides, lid and dash. Some people put iron on the bottom of the churn, so as to keep away fairies. The butter is usually made three times a week in Summer and once a week in winter. Women usually churn, but sometimes all the people of the house help. Strangers who come in take a '' brais '' (a hand) for fear that anyone would think they they brought away the butter. Churning takes an hour and a half.
