Forts are to be found all over Ireland. They were the dwelling-places of the ancient Irish tribes. In some places where the country is of a rocky nature these forts were made of stone. In County Cavan they are made of earth, the actual houses on them being of timber.
There are three large forts near Cavan, Deggan fort, which is in the downland of Deggan are about two miles from the school on the Cavan- Belturbet road, Drumkeen fort, near Loreto College, and the cross forts in the downland of Drumbo.
