- In my district marriages mostly occur before Advent and at Shrove. The days thought unlucky for marriages are Saturdays and Thursdays and the old proverb says that "Saturdays flitting is a short sitting". An old rhyme is said about the days of the week telling us what days are lucky and what days are unlucky.
Monday for wealth,
Tuesday for health,
Wednesday the best day of all.
Thursday for crosses,
Friday for losses.
And Saturday for nothing at all.
It is thought that the month of May is an unlucky month to get married because it is devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the month of July because it is between the "sickle and the scythe."
