- The people long ago ate a lot of bread. As they had not many different kinds of food, they made the Bread into different sorts. They made "Boxty" bread, oaten bread, potato cake and dumplings.
This is the way "boxty" bread is made. First the people wash the potatoes and peel them, then they grate them till they are very fine. They pound up some boiled potatoes and mix flour with them. Then they pound the boiled and the raw potatoes together and put them on the pan.
Oaten bread is made by mixing oaten meal, water and a little salt together. Then the people knead them and put the cake leaning against a stool beside the fire.
