- (continued from previous page)and some of them had no glass in them. Instead of glass they used wire netting threaded with rushes.
The old floors were made of clay, and every house had a half door. This was always closed during the daytime. Sometimes a frame of wire netting was put over the half door to prevent the fowl from flying into the kitchen. The big door was only closed at night and it was seldom locked.
Home made candles were used for giving light. These were made from rushes dipped in fat, and a tallow candle was made from cotton thread with the melted fat poured round them in a mould.- Collector
