On seeing the soldiery the mass servers made their retreat to Loc na
    Ngcléireac and were drowned.
When mass was about to be ended the priest turning round, raising his hands, announced the words Ite Missa Est.
The soldiers thought this a very courageous act not understanding the meaning of the words but thinking he was spreading out his arms to be shot.
The priest said he was ready now.
The leader of the force said he would let him go on account of his bravery.
I got the foregoing account from,
    Jimmie Martin
    Carrickacromin,
    Mountain Lodge,
    Cootehill who is about
eighty years of age and is in perfect health.
He spent most of his early life in Scotland. He came home to a cottage in Carrickacromin bringing his wife and family with him.
He earned his livelihood as a farm lobourer.
