- The Famine of 1846 and 1847 affected the district from Carrickacromin to Drumnagar very badly.
The population of this district was reduced nearly to half the number.
We can yet see the ruined walls of the houses which were then occupied by families.
On some farms there are two or three of these ruined houses to be seen.
The cause of this Famine was the failure of the potato crop.
In the month of July in the year 1846 the blight came on the potatoes and they rotted in the ground.
The cattle and sheep also died in this year.
