    This crop would have made up for the potato failure if all the people had kept it.
    The English offered tempting prices for the wheat and they succeeded in buying the nine tenths of it.
    In return for this they sent one ship load of Indian meal for every nine shiploads of wheat.
    The corn crop was also very bad in the year 1846.
    The people now realized their foolishness in giving away their wheat.
    They were now faced with starvation and they were undergoing terrible sufferings.
    The English government was appealed to for some relief for the starving people.
    In answer to this appeal a few cargoes of Indian meal was sent over.
