- The Famine
The famine occured in the year 1847. The cause of this famine was the failure of the potato crop. The reason why it affected the people so much was that there was no corn grown in the country those days and it was on the potatoes that the people solely relied.
To assist the people the government established relief schemes. The people who worked for four pence a day and any person who was able to wheel a barrow got sixpence.
The previous year the potato crop was very successful. The people were very thankful for the good crop and it is believed that this was a punishment sent(continues on next page)- Collector
