    the monster and ultimately banished it to Lough Doulough, near Mountcallen.
    There are only three persons over seventy years living in the island at present. Two of these can speak Irish pretty fluently and can repeat old stories quite distinctly in both English and Irish. Their names are Patrick Scanlan, Honour Scanlon (Patrick's wife), and John Moran.
    Even while emigration to America was possible, not many of the Scattery inhabitants went out there. Most of the families are engaged in piloting ships up the Shannon to Limerick, and that together with their small farms of good arable land, enabled them to keep their children
