  1. About sixty years ago Sinon Scanlon, my grandfather piloted a ship up the Shannon as far as Beigh-Castle. He left the ship at that spot and from there walked to Askeaton. His object in doing so was to get a "lift" as far as Limerick and so home by train. He was not very long on the road when a man on a common horse overtook him. Following the car was an untrained foal. My grandfather asked the man for a seat and he, joking him told him to mount the foal. My grandfather did so much to the astonishment of the man,
