- A long time ago the old people used to make their own toys out of turnips. They used to make the shape of a bird out of a turnip. Then they used to make a gun out of a stick and fire at the bird. Another toy that was made out of a turnip was the magic lantern. They used to make it like a mans face and put a candle in it. The young people used be afraid of this.
