Some years ago there was a flourishing lace class attached to the Belturbet Convent school. It gave employment to over 100 girls. The crochet was sold in Ireland in France and in America. The industry went down when the Irish crochet went out of fashion.
Long ago linen used to be woven from flax in a street in this town which is still called "The Weavers' Row".- Collector
