In the country salt and rice are substituted for confetti so that very often amidst the rejoicings and congratulations many a person gets their eyes filled with salt.
People in the country do not go on their honeymoon, instead they take the longest route to the bride's house where a wedding feast takes place. Three or four car loads accompany the newly married pair. The cars are decorated in a most attractive manner with flowers of every hue, flags and ribbons.
It is a custom, by way of jest, to tie something like an old shoe to the car in which the newly married are. Bonfires are lighted at different centres on the way, lighted sheaves are held up on forks and people returning home are cheered with waving of hands, flags, and ribbons. It is thought very lucky that an old man should await their arrival.
The wedding feast, then takes place. The best of musicians, who have been previously invited, are present, so that the music is heard far and near. Drink of every kind is served. Generally wine is given to the young girls, whiskey to the old men and women, and porter to the young men.
