- Digging potatoes in this locality about fifty years agoAbout fifty years ago the diggers were unknown in this locality and the digging was done with spades. The men who wished to be hired as diggers would get a spade and go to the end of the Main Street, Carrick-on-Suir after the Masses there. Then the farmers would come and hire some of the men. The highest wages given was about seven shillings and they used to work from dawn to dark. Usually one picker, picked the potatoes after four diggers. All the weeds were laid out in one rank the stalks in another and the potatoes in(continues on next page)
