- Ferns grow in arable land and spread rapidly and impoverish the soil. This weed can be banished by being mown tiwce each year, first in June and later in September. A continual repetition of this for a few years banishes the fern. Thistles also grow in arable land, impoverish the soil and spread rapidly unless cut down in Summer below the surface of the earth by means of some sharp instrument, e.g. a spade.(continues on next page)
