pronounced locally .Note, however that there is a hill in Ing called the Murrosk hill a murdhuach or mermaid hill.
The Mc Namaras according to legend descended from a mermaid ,and I think that the local name Mágh Riabhuch given to a section of the family is a corruption of murdhuach.
I submit ,moreover, that the Magh Riabhach or Murdhuach Mc Namaras of -whom there are a few families in this district yet -are the real descendants of the chiefs of Clan Culein, the one time Mac Conmara ríoghmail, next in power to the Kings. In Elizabeth's time those chiefs refused to conform and they had to hide amongst the peasantry and lead the lives of peasants .As a consequence ,White says ,the real chieftain stock can no linger be traced .Does the title Magh Riabhach lead us to the solution of Whites difficulty?
"Two Mc Namaras -Macks they are called here had a row one day down at Lough Ash.One put up no fight at all .A friend met the victor and complimented him"Oh"said the conqueror ,"he's no good :he's not a Mágh Riabhach(Mr Murry)".
I have mentioned previously the name ,Geat na gceannaidhe certainly a strange survival .it is located in Ing.Outside Newmarket(continues on next page)- Informant
