- Croagh Patrick is situated between the town of Louisburgh and the town of Westport. St. Patrick spent forty days and forty nights on the top of that hill. He banished all the serpents from it, and it is said that he cast them into a lake in Donegal, called Lough Derg. People think that the water of the lake is red on account of all the snakes that were banished into it. In doing what they called a "station of the reek" the people go up from the Murrisk side until they came to the statue of St. Patrick and they bless themselves there.
