- (continued from previous page)are observed by the people. St. Stephens day is the day after Christmas and is the day for hunting the wren. People dress up in old clothes and go from house to house playing and dancing for which they receive money. They also sing old rhymes. When they get tired travelling they count the money and divide it. St. Patrick's Day is the next feast that is kept. On that day everyone wears a shamrock in honour of St. Patrick who told the people long ago at Tara that there are three persons in God just as there were three leaves on the one stem. On that day people go to drown the shamrock. Shrove Tuesday night is pancake night and is the last night before lent. Ash Wednesday is the first day of lent and people get ashes on their foreheads to put them in mind that they came from dust and that they will go into dust when they die. Holy Thursday reminds us of the day that our Lord had his last supper with his apostles. Good Friday the day which our Lord was crucified and died nailed to a cross.
