    Roscommon. Although he was never trained as an athlete and always wore heavy nailed boots it is well known that he scarcely ever troubled opening a gate no matter how high it was, he just took a short run and hopped across it.
    At that time there used to be an annual sports held in the town of Elphin on the fifteenth of August and all the best athletes came from all over the country to compete and among them was a great jumper who was supposed to be one of the best in Ireland. This Mick Glancy happened to be at the sports and had no notion to take part in it, but the towns people
    knowing him so well thought to persuade him to contest the high jump but he refused at first.
    This other athlete who was competing heard of Glancy and wanted to see what sort of man he was, so when he found him out and saw the type of man he was, he laughed at the idea of a country farmer attempting to contest against him. A neighbour of his who knew what he could do says
